How to start with game dev?

To introduce myself, I am Kristian, 19 years old, and studied until the last semester games programming at university XY (I don't like the uni so I don't mention it here). I built a good portfolio and work currently as a freelancer since my own company is not profitable enough yet.

So how to start with game dev? It's that simple; you have to learn how to learn self-thought, youtube, and Google will be your best friend, I recommend Brackeys on youtube and GameDevHQ. You have to be patient and I recommend to learn by doing and developing projects, but no too big scaled projects at the beginning, because you will improve you self in the first one or two years soo fast, that you won't have fun to work on a project for too long.

As tools I would recommend all beginners and pros the engine Unity, the engine is free to use unless you earn more than XY per year, and the asset store provides you a large amount of art, etc.

About game dev, never start learning both game art and game programming, choose one of them, and game design may be and focus on it. Trust me, it's no shame to use game assets from unity and other artists.

If you are patient, I recommend you also my own upcoming masterclass about game development, you will learn there both game design and game programming, project management, and more! So if you are interested sign up with your email to stay up to date.
